  • Carom billiards

    The name Carom billiards evolved from carambole billiards. It is usually referred to a class of pool games which are played on a pocket less pool table. The dimension of these tables is 5 by 10 foot. The history of this game can be traced to the 18 Th century France. The word carom evolved from the word carambola which means a red ball. The main objective of a carom pool game is to carom off the opponent’s cue ball along with the object ball in one shot. Many variants of the game are played namely balk line, artistic and three cushion billiards, straight rail, etc.

    Cloth

    The cloth which is used to cover the playing area on a carom table is usually made of worsted wool. Using worsted wool provides a fast surface with minimum resistance for the balls. The original game of carom was played on green grass therefore the green color of the carom table. Green is also the most pleasing color for the human eye.

    Balls

    Earlier the balls were made of wood. Later ivory was used for making the pool balls. After a great deal of hue and cry from environmentalists and animal lovers search was started for an alternative for ivory. The modern day carom balls are made of composites such as plastics, acrylics and resins. Carom billiards is played with three balls-a white ball which is used as a cue, a second cue ball which is red with a black dot on it, and a third ball which is also red in color. These balls are comparatively larger and heavier than the pocket billiards ball.

    Billiard cues

    The carom cue is slightly different from the billiards cue. The cues which are used are shorter, stouter, have a fat butt and its tip is more pointed .This change was necessitated because the carom balls are heavier than ordinary billiards pool balls. This type of cue helps the player to exercise better control on his shots, execute better deflections and spin.

    Heated boards

    Heated boards are required by law in all carom pool games. Heating the slate to a temperature that is 5 deg more than the room temperature removes the dampness from the carom table and facilitates the ball to move faster. In earlier times hot water was passed through Zinc tubes fixed below the base of the carom table. In modern times heating coils are used.

    Different forms of game

    The origin of carom can be traced to France. It was much like the present day Straight Rail game. The scoring pattern in a straight rail game is simple. The player earns a point each time he makes contact with both the balls with a single strike with his cue ball. The player who reaches the agreed number of counts first is declared a winner. Other forms of carom pool games are balk line, cushion carom, the champion’s game and artistic carom. These games are played with some minor variations.

  • " Billiards table"

       I’ve been playing Billiards for many years believe me I am really enjoying my life. During my entire journey I have learned many things about this game and on the basis of that experience I am going to tell all the beginners about this game.

     Billiards table

         A game of billiards is played on a billiards table. Modern pool tables are made of slate and is covered with a cloth and finally surrounded with a tough cushion. The table rests on an elevated stand. A powerful lamp hangs over the billiard table so that every portion of the table is illuminated.

     Dimensions

        A standard pool table can vary between 3.5 feet by 7 feet to 6 feet by 12 feet. Usually the game is played on tables that are 4.5 feet by 9 feet. Snooker tables are the largest with a dimension of up to 12 feet. They also have smaller pockets as compared to conventional pool tables.8 foot tables are used in homes. Coin operated pool table which is a common place in bars and clubs are 7 feet ones. Most of the pool tables are rectangular but the use of other shaped pool table such as zig zag or hexagonal are on the rise

     Cushion.

         Cushions which are some times referred to as rails or bumpers are fixed on the sides of the tables. These cushions are made of rubber or synthetic look alikes.The main function of the cushion is to help the ball to rebound with minimum loss of kinetic energy. The angle in which the cushions are placed differs in different pool tables. The carom table has a cushion which is placed at a sharper angle .The snooker table has an L shaped cushion structure to facilitate the punting of the balls.

     Cloth

         The playing area of the pool table is covered with a green colored cloth made of woven wool or a blend of wool and nylon. The cloth is 21 to 24 ounce billiard cloth. The quality of the wool used has a bearing on the speed of the balls. Worsted wool is the best .The speed of the cloth on the billiard table determines the turn, spin and other finer aspects of the game.

     Carom billiards tables

          Pool games such as balk line or artistic billiards use pocket less pool table. The most common carom table is rectangular and measures 10 feet by 5 feet. To make the balls move faster the slate of the carom table is heated above 5 deg from the normal room temperature .This removes moisture from the table and makes the balls move faster.

     Pocket pool tables

         Pocket billiards as the name suggests have pockets at the four corners of the pool table and two pockets in the middle. The pockets are lined with leather and have bags to collect the punted balls. Such tables are the standard for any pool game which involves the eight or nine ball game.

     Snooker tables

        A regulation snooker table is 3569 mm by 1778 mm. It has pockets which measures 90 mm. There are six pockets in all four on the four corners of the table and one each in the centre of the longest side of the cushions. The snooker pockets are different from the billiards pockets as they are rounded as compared to the sharp billiards pockets. The cushions are made of rubber and the table has a base of slate covered with a green colored cloth made of worsted wool. Most snooker tables have a nap which is marked by a line.

  • History of snooker

    History of snooker

    DSCN2071

    The history of snooker is a checkered one .the game itself originated from the pool game billiards. Billiards was the favorite indoor game of the British army as it did not require much space and hence could be played in the confines of the army mess or the club. The original game of billiards could be played only by two people .Therefore to accommodate more players many variations of the game was introduced. Like the life pool or the pyramid pool. Snooker is a hybrid of the traditional pool game of billiards and the multiple players’ version.

    The Beginning

    In the early 15th century when the game of billiards was first played it w as confined to the palaces and mansions of Aristocrats. The tables had only holes in which the balls were potted but the tables did not have cushions or side rails. This game gained popularity among the British forces stationed in India. Life in India for the British was monotonous and combined with the four months of incessant monsoon rains forced the British to stay indoors. The British played the traditional game of billiards and to accommodate more players introduced the life pool and pyramid pool type of the game. Life pool had colored balls which served as both cue and object balls. The pyramid pool variation of the game had 15 red balls and a cue ball. The pool table also evolved into the present day table. Cushions, pockets, and side rails were added to spare the players the misery of picking the balls.

    The Black pool

    It was the next variation of the game .A black ball was added which allowed the players to pot for more points. In 1875 A bored beurocrat, Sir Neville Francis, in Jabalpur, a lesser town in central India suggested the use of colored balls in the new version if the game. The name for the game Snooker also has an interesting story. During a game of Black pool Sir Neville called a player snooker for missing a shot and the name stuck. Snooker was a derogatory slang for the first year cadet. The game was seen by Mr John Roberts who introduced the game in England. Thus the game of snooker was born.

    The Early Years

    The first championship was held in 1916 and the first professional competition was held in 1927.The winner was Joe Davis who dominated the game till his retirement in 1946.In 1969 a new variation of the game The pot black was launched by the BBC.It was also a year when color television was launched and this led the game to become immensely popular. The game found new sponsors and money poured into the game.

    Modern Times

    Snooker continues to enjoy immense popularity in modern times. There were minor hiccups when one of the major sponsors of the game –tobacco companies were forbade from sponsoring the game after the introduction of anti tobacco laws in Britain. But the game continues to gain popularity especially in countries like China and Korea.

  • Snooker rules of pool game

    pool-4

    Snooker, a variant of the pool game of billiards, is played on a board whose dimensions are usually 6 feet by 12 feet. It has six pockets one at all the four corners and one each at the middle of the two long portions of the table. At a distance of 29 inches from the cushion there is a baulk line. A semicircle is drawn in the middle of this baulk and is known as the D. Its radius is 29.5 cm. Snooker tables are very large .For domestic use smaller tables are preferred. These tables are 6 feet in length and the other parameters such as the ball size and number of rows are also reduced.

    The balls

    The diameter of snooker balls are 52.5 mm. Some snooker balls measure 52.4 mm in diameter. Smaller balls are used in domestic variety of pool games. The colors of the ball are as follows:-

    1.15 red balls

    2 6 colored (yellow, blue, pink, black, green, and brown)

    3. One white cue ball

    None of these balls are numbered though in the American variety of snooker game the colored balls are often numbered.

    The Game

    At the start of the pool game of snooker the six colored balls are placed at their spots. The green ball is placed at the point where the semicircle meets the left line, the brown ball at the middle of the line and the yellow line at the spot where the semicircle meets the right line. The blue ball is placed at the centre of the table. The pink ball is placed midway between the blue ball and the top cushion. The pink balls are placed in a triangle behind the pink ball. The black ball is placed 32.5 cm from the top cushion.

    Objective

    The purpose of the game is to hit the cue ball with the cue to pot the object balls into one of the pockets. Points are scored on the balls potted and the player who pots the maximum balls is the winner of the frame, the player who wins a majority of the frames is the winner of the match. The number of frames is usually odd. A frame ends when all the balls are potted. A frame can also end when a player concedes defeat. A player wins the match if he wins a majority of the total frames.

    Game play

    The balls are set at the beginning of the game as directed by the umpire. Players start the game by a break off using a white cue ball. The cue ball can be placed anywhere on the D. The player takes turn to visit the table to pot the balls. The total number of points scored by the player in one visit to the table is known as a break. The players turn ends when he fails to pot a ball. The next player visits the table and the game continues. For a particular stroke the ball which can be hit first by the cue ball is known as the ‘ON’ ball. If a red ball is potted it has to be followed by a colored ball. A break is terminated if a red ball is not potted. The game of snooker has two stages. In the first stage when there are red balls on the table the player tries to pot the reds ball His break is terminated if he misses to pot a red ball. When a player pots a red ball he gets a point. If one or more red balls are potted, the player can exercise the right to choose   any of the color balls which now becomes an ‘ON’ ball. When the colored ball which the player has selected he gets points which are according to the color of the ball. The ball is then placed at its original place. If the place is occupied the ball is placed at the highest spot which is available. It is a foul to hit a ball which is not ‘ON’. The requirement of a colored ball to be potted after a red ball ends after all the red ball has been potted. The colored balls must be potted in a fixed sequence. When all the colors have been potted the frame is declared over. The player who has scored the maximum points takes the frame.

  • The Bottle Pool Game

             DSCN2071

    “Bottle pool” also recognized as the “bottle-billiards” as well as “bottle pocket billiards”. Bottle pool is an amalgam billiards game, mingling the aspects of both the “carom billiards” and the “pocket billiards” games. It is played on the regular pool table, with merely 2 object balls, a “cue ball”, along with a 6¾ inch long, taper-necked bottle given name as “shake bottle” or “tally bottle”. Usually, the shake bottles are made of leather, which is positioned at the table and employed as a objective for caroms. Sometimes, bottle pool is erroneously used as a synonym for “Kelly pool” game. Bottle pool is defined as merging the elements of billiards; chess and straight pool wrapped up in a set of rules that prolifically rewards deliberate shot playing and penalizes faults by Sisyphean point reversals.

                        Bottle pool is been played ever since late 1800s. It became more popular in the mid 20th century, it is also acknowledged that bottle pool was played by a few renowned players, like the world famous “quantum chemist” as well as “biochemist” Linus Pauling.

                       Above the time, bottle pool has built-up a discriminatory image, due to its dynamic play that was in turn, usually the region of the “gentlemen's clubs” and few selected groups than the clientele of billiard parlors. Regardless of being counted as a small group of “non-championship” games, nevertheless, detailed in the “Official Rules” as well as “Records Book of the Billiard Congress of America” from 2006, bottle pool was identified barely as the billiard sport of common choice at some “New York City Social Clubs”. An experienced person of the clubs said in 2006 that there existed less than 1,000 enthusiastic bottle pool players around the nation.

     Rules to Play

                            The primary requirement for playing the Bottle Pool is to set-up the bottle for the game. At the beginning of the game, the tally bottle is positioned upturned at the “center spot”, which is the middle of the pool table. The 2 object balls are used to play the game named as 1-ball and 2-ball. 1-ball is placed on the foot rail of the diamond right away flanking to the right-corner pocket, with the 2-ball kept adjacent to the left-corner pocket on the foot rail of the diamond. After placing, the shake bottle, the player breaks starting with “cue ball” in hand from back of the head string, as well as targets either of the 2 object balls to achieve a legal break. The aim of the Bottle pool game is to attain exactly at least 31 points prior to the other opponent players, with a “draconian penalty” for going beyond the benchmark.

     Scoring the Game

                            There are some pre-defined scores in the bottle pool game for every legal shot played, such as,

     • On pocketing 1-ball, a player scores one point;

    • On pocketing 2-ball, player scores 2 points;

    • When the cue ball is caromed off of both the object balls, solo point is scored by the player;

    • If the cue ball is caromed off of  any of the object balls or else both object balls into the bottle and hitting it onto its area, scores 5 points;

    • Caroming the cue ball off either or both, the object balls in the bottle, and then hitting on its base, consequences an automatic win.

               All the scoring potentials mentioned above can be united; importing the highest number of points obtainable on a solo stroke is “9”, proficient by caroming as well as pocketing both the object balls, together with hitting over the bottle, along with the cue ball. In case, a player passes the benchmark, named as a "burst", the score of 31 points overshot by the player becomes his new score. For instance, a player has scored 30 points, and then wins 5 points by caroming the “cue ball” off the object ball into the bottle, as well as hitting it in its area, the player scores are reset to 4 points.

                         After the player achieves precisely 31 points, he should announce his accomplishment to all the players, prior to the other player hits a shot and victors the game. If player does not feats, the player needs to wait for announcing his winning score, until his chance comes up once again in the rotation. However, if the other player in between successfully scores 31 points, and announces it, then that player victors the game.
